Series: 'Bloodrayne' (the original two computer games, not film adaptations).
Age: Older than she looks.
From: Was originally from after the second game. She would have returned to her world and been in the midst of combat: Not death, but a confrontation where the potential had existed for it.
Status: Inmate: Rayne dislikes humanity almost as much as vampires, by and large (possibly in part because of experiences in her formative childhood years). She has demonstrated virtually no obvious empathy with helping humans for the sake of being good; rather, any assistance she gave was usually because it coincided with a reason to hurt, frustrate or destroy someone or something she disliked. Has no qualms about killing, but she isn't here to change that.
Abilities: Typically, Rayne has superhuman strength, speed and reflexes (so much so, that the world can appear to move in slow-motion or even on pause, from her own perspective). She can visually perceive auras and detect the health of a living thing through this (and could send a ghostly projection of herself to drain targets of blood from afar). Rayne is especially well-versed at gymnastics/acrobtics, as well as the use of most firearms.
It's useful to keep in mind that water and sunlight, alike, both act like powerful acid.
Rayne feeds upon blood, but apparently shows no displeasure in draining rotting zombies of their vital fluids, which strongly implies she is immune to disease. To accomplish this, she administers a fanged bite and begins to drink. Draining blood usually also allows virtually instantaneous healing.
At present, however, these would be modified accordingly:
Her strength, speed and reflexes would be lessened to those relevant to a human female of her build. Rayne still has gymnastic instinct, as that would be more down to experience, but would have to learn how to physically compensate for any altered state.
Likewise, she wouldn't be able to project herself out of body to drain a target. However, visual perception of auras/physical health has no obvious need to be negated - and could potentially be helpful with rehabilitation. It allow her natural night-vision, but would otherwise afford her little in the way of advantages against, say, being restrained.
Both sunlight and simple water would still be destructive and she must feed on blood, which means that her fangs are always visible (if being looked for).
Unless otherwise decreed, she should still have accelerated healing from any damage sustained, but it would require an intake of blood to initiate this, along with her unique biological immunity from disease (both being qualities which are purely protective in nature and have been with her since childhood).
Personality: The product of a vampire's premeditated sexual assault upon her human mother, Rayne's 'dhampir' nature has meant she's never quite felt like she belonged in conventional society, since she hates the undead with a passion and yet continues to be naturally drawn to a feral, hedonistic impulse. As a supernaturally-enhanced predator, Rayne has long since chosen to manage these two sides of her nature, rather than unhealthily repress them (and, indeed, seems to make highly suggestive moans of pleasure when draining a victim to death).
It was apparently in her teenage years when Rayne began to use her natural talents for retribution and tried to hunt down her father, Kagan, with a clear intent to kill him. While the authorities did temporarily apprehend her, she protested that none of her victims were human, which indicates at least some moral clarity on the subject of killing - although, later, this developed into not caring about causing human death, so long as her victims were the likes of Nazi personnel and criminals. Upon being asked to join with them, Rayne simply affirmed that she opposes senseless killing - although, in light of her sadistic enjoyment of, say, decapitation and cleaving enemies in two, this distinction seems murky and more down to her point of view in each specific confrontation.
While she doesn't look it, Rayne has been around for a lot longer than appearances suggest. Privately, she might admit she's technically an 'old lady' and will have particularly vivid memories of World War Two, when she was sent out on missions to disrupt Nazi use of occult knowledge (which probably extended to similar assassination tasks against Communist nations during the Cold War). She gives an impression of liking the primal atmosphere of industrial music, but is just as likely to enjoy big band melodies, considering when she grew up.
Most of the time, Rayne could well come across as semi-lethargic, due to her casual, almost lazy mood (and tendency for dark humour), but she can be a passionate soul, prone to getting bitchy, if not argumentative and violent (to all intents and purposes, perhaps coming across as a form of 'predatory slacker'). Especially if the subject of vampires comes up. Rayne doesn't lack conviction and seems very willing to call a spade a spade, regardless of how others feel. Hatred is usually more of a motivator than anything else and she generally veers between jaded been-there-done-that and a more confrontational personality, depending on the situation. A successful path to redemption would probably help her to be more proactive in general, since it's that very lack of empathy to anyone else which drives many of her day-to-day interactions.
To an extent, the Brimstone Society, who eventually recruited her, has never been something she felt personal loyalty towards. Their goals mostly just happened to coincide with Rayne's and she was ready for them eventually perceiving her as a threat, too, once a form of vampiric apocalypse began to take over (due to absolutist ideology). Ultimately, Rayne has become used to being treated as a weapon (complying with a 'fight fire with fire' philosophy), if only through missions undertaken for the Brimstone Society. In a way, it could be said that she was exploited by them, but it's a role she's been perfectly content with. What is worth noting, however, was that when she ultimately killed her genocidal vampiric father, she openly spoke of not feeling any sadness or guilt over it - it actually felt quite good to have finally secured revenge.
As of right now, she seems most alive when she has someone or something to fight, rather than an altruistic cause to fight for.
Reactions: Rayne has a high level of experience with the supernatural-related strangeness, but the concept of the ship will leave her confused at how absurd it is. That there are individuals walking around from popular culture, might be seen as evidence of it all potentially just being a dream.
Upon learning her purpose here is for what amounts to an unnecessary attitude adjustment, there will be justified protests of how she's saved her world more than once.
After a while, unless given alternative motivation, she'll very probably revert to jaded cynicism and effectively see it as incarceration with a sadist in command of it all.
Redemption: It might well be that Rayne identifies with sociopathic qualities. Nevertheless, she needs to somehow be taught a greater sense of empathy and compassion (something which isn't alien to her, but which she rarely experiences or exhibits). She's half-human, after all - even if she dislikes being reminded of it.
Keep in mind that Rayne will hate the system. She'll understand what a warden is trying to do (as she's been one) and getting her to understand they should really be seen as more of a mentor will be helpful. But that doesn't mean she'll necessarily agree with what they say.
Rayne has a default impulse to detest most of humanity almost as much as she hates vampires (with the notable exceptions of her mother and Sir Trumain, who was apparently responsible for taking Rayne in and, to some extent, even raising her). This needs to be reversed, so that she has more of an open mind and doesn't simply always assume the worst of people. Experience has a way of shaping everyone and Rayne's just so happens to have been darker than most. She simply hasn't been exposed to much in the way of positive experiences related to regular human society.
For the most part, she could probably be trusted with being given back her abilities (and would be thankful for the potential to defend herself). She has a particular loving fondness for the two large metal blades she folds back across her forearms and, for obvious reasons, the promise of having her 'angels' returned to her (or at least, placed securely in her midst, even if kept inaccessible) could be an excellent incentive to secure good behaviour. Their origins are a mystery, but she cherishes them like beloved companions.
My favourite part about USS Shit Bucket are weekends like this... No, really. Getting turned into a mutant vegetable or made to fucking sing about personal hygiene. Yeah, it just wouldn't be the same place without that.
Vacations from sanity, man... And some of you guys signed up for this? See, 'cause maybe you're brainwashed. How would you even know? You're the ones doing the Admiral's bitch-work around here and you don't even have a name. Just helping the rest of us swirl down the shitter, blowing sunshine up our collective ass for the privelige.
I've got a vampire apocalypse to take care of, back home, but I'm somehow the one who gets shoved in space jail? And that's supposed to be... What, ethical? Morally superior? And because you get to polish this Admiral's tiara, every time one of us gets a gold star, that makes you the good guys?
Nuh-uh. You're clowns in the fun-house. You just don't see the face-paint.
Sample - Scene:
Even Rayne's sigh sounded like it needed a break. Like a smoker with hands in need of tangible preoccupation, the dhampir rolled head back as she sat there, whimpering out a, "So fucking b..." But stopped short of completing the sentence, because crying out 'bored' seemed like the kind of thing which would be remedied in... Unpleasant ways. Life aboard an interdimensional mental asylum had a way of breeding the most malicious varieties of entertainment, as if the ship, itself, was not only self-aware, but eagerly looking for an excuse to share its own insanity, like a volcano eruption.
Scowling in recognition of this, the redhead lifted herself to feet, feeling as thou she should ready herself for... What? A representative? Maybe one of those delightful moments where her personality, memories or even body could instantaneously be exchanged for those of another existence.
Was this even 'her'? The real her? Maybe she was someone else. Maybe Rayne was just an invention. Hell, maybe that would be for the better... But then, something told her that feeling generally fucked off all the time just felt right.
"Yeah, you're just itching to turn me into a lobster or something, ain'tcha'?"
Rayne was almost certain a bulkhead groaned in response to that and she slowly reared head back, feeling uneasy.
Maybe being social would help? Maybe that would somehow work in her favour. Or... Asking her warden to spend some time together. Making some progress.
Yeah, fuck that, thought the fanged passenger, heading back to her room. Somewhere familiar. Somewhere Rayne could fool herself, if only briefly, that she was still home. Still wanted dead by former friends and foes, alike, but at least had a fighting chance.
Not somewhere which could rip your past away like a throw rug and pretend it was done as a learning experience. Right.
